The weekend’s fixtures were almost completely wiped out due to the atrocious weather, but two fixtures managed to go ahead. Both games were packed with goals and high drama.
In the Premier Division, an exhilarating battle was had at Marley Pots as Aquatic Sports and Blue House produced a 5-5 draw.
Blue House started the game great and won an early corner it which was swept in from the left over everybody for Keith Lonsdale to run in at the back post and bullet a header past the goalie. The lead only lasted a couple of minutes as Aquatic Sports drew level to make it 1-1. Blue House began to play some lovely football and regained the lead as James Gilhespy won the ball and outran the home defence and blasted the ball past the helpless keeper. It was nearly 3-1 to Blue House but the referee harshly ruled out Martin Hope’s effort, from this Aquatic broke away and equalised to make it 2-2. The game was end to end as both teams battled away in conditions that were described as deplorable.
This didn’t deter a focused Blue House as they were rewarded for their persistence as Martin ‘Ghandi’ Hope put his side in front again as he mis-kicked his cross and it sailed over the bemused keeper and into the net. Aquatic are made of sterner stuff this season and hit straight back as they were awarded a penalty, unfortunately the spot kick was saved in style by South African John McLean and the resulting rebound was cleared off the line. This seemed to break Aquatic’s spirit and Blue House capitalised on this as Alan Golightly scored a sublime goal to give his side a 4-2 lead. The action just didn’t stop there as Aquatic gave themselves a lifeline as they grabbed another goal to make it 3-4 right on half time.
The second half started at a frantic pace with both teams going at it hammer and tongs, Blue House settled into their stride and missed numerous chances to kill the game off, but it was Aquatic who got the breakthrough as they equalised for the third time in the match to make it 4-4. Blue House went in search for the winner and they thought they had got it when Alan Golightly smashed in his second goal of the game. As the game wore on both sides had chances and it was Blue House who had the best chance of the half as they were awarded a penalty, up stepped Martin Hope and he could only watch in despair as he saw his spot kick saved.
This spurred Aquatic on and they finally got their just rewards as they got the equaliser to bring the score to an astonishing 5-5. Chances were missed at both ends but neither side could find that elusive winner. Scott Hailstone was the hero for Aquatic as he bagged a hattrick and was backed up with goals from Carl Old and Simon Pennock. Jordan Thompson was man of the match for Colin Hope’s men.
In the First Division, Hylton CW Juniors hit the goal trail for the second week running, this time they handed out a 10-1 beating to a startled Usworth. With prolific marksman David Ward missing, it was left up to his fellow team mates to fill their boots. Man of the match Mark Curry led the way with an excellent hattrick, Gavin Dorward helped himself to a brace, Andrew Kibble and Jon Stokoe also hit the back of the net before Shaun Harrison weighed in with an impressive hattrick. Ross McGlen hit a consolation goal fro Usworth whilst Evan Lowrie was their star performer.
