The race is now on to avoid the First Division wooden spoon as both the Cove and East Durham Spartans claimed their first wins of the season.
The Cove celebrated long into the night after their tremendous 3-1 win away to Times Inn. Stephen Lisle was their major influence on the game, but it was the firepower of Andrew Brown whose hattrick sealed a first win of the season for the Cove. Neil McNulty replied in vain for the Southwick side who also had Michael Donkin as their star man.
East Durham Spartans have plenty of catching up to do as they have a lot of games to play, but they will savour their first victory of the season as they put Shiney Row Country Park Inn to the sword with a magnificent 4-1 victory. Adam Crake hit Park Inn’s consolation as they had no answer to the Spartans display of whom their hero of the hour was Philip Robinson who hit all four goals to grab his sides first win.
At the top of the league it is now getting interesting as Colliery Tavern kept the pressure on the league leaders as they enjoyed a 9-0 romp against a lacklustre Usworth FC. Anthony Stokell started the flow of goals with a well taken hattrick, Carl Chapman chipped in as well as did Michael Bulmer who helped himself to a hattrick. Further goals from Shaun McGregor and Lee ‘John Mensah’ Pennock who hit a ferocious 30 yard mis- kick sealed the win. Special mention must go to the Colliery Tavern who produced a dominant and steely display.
Hylton Colliery Juniors returned to league action and picked up where they left off as they were amongst the goals again as they stormed to an easy 4-1 against Park View. Man of the match Dave Lilwall hit Park View’s consolation goal.
Sassco UK played their first game since December and despite lack of match fitness they still managed to grab a welcome 2-0 win against Shiney Row Travellers Rest. A very drab game saw the Travellers have the majority of the play, but seemingly running out of ideas when they approached the danger areas. Sassco, on the other hand, didn't really play too well, but took the lead against the run of play when Muers rolled the ball into the back of the Traveller's net after a quick break away. Not too long after, Sassco's new signing, Scott Hembrough, broke clear and was scythed down in the penalty area and the ref pointed to the spot. Up stepped club stalwart Dave Gourlay who made no mistake in putting Sassco 2-0 ahead. The second half continued as the first half did. Traveller's had a good chances, but squandered them and then tended to resort to wayward long-range efforts, none of which troubled Dave Smith in the home goal. Sassco had a great chance towards the end to wrap up a convincing win, but Anthony Langan scuffed his shot when well placed.
In the division’s other game, Cambridge Hotel edged themselves to a 3-1 success against a wasteful Saltgrass. Goals from Liam Richardson, Paul Hetherington and star man Paul Stokoe gave Cambridge the points. John Hope fired a consolation goal for the Deptford side whose man of the match was Ian Sinclair.
Jolly Potters cemented their footing at the top of the Premier Division as they beat Hendon FC for the second successive week after a 4-2 win. Star performer Jason Gargett hit both Hendon goals but it was all in vain as the Potters simply had too much gas in the tank, goals from Clayton Cox, Ross Kennedy and a brace from the prolific Michael Wharton saw the Potters home.
Colonel Prior’s ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ season continued as they suffered a crushing 4-1 loss at the hands of Chesters BB. The Prior were again missing crucial players due to work commitments and suspensions, this showed in their performance as they struggled to find any rythym or cohesion as the Chesters ran out worthy winners.
Chesters took the lead with a fabulous strike into the top scorer thanks to Michael Chapman. Prior responded straight away and levelled as Chris Rowntree stooped flick the ball into the net from a Glenwright corner. Thing then went from bad to worse for the Prior as Stanness then scored an own goal to give Chesters a 2-1 lead, then it was 3-1 as a long throw was misjudged by the keeper and the ball was gleefully nodded into an empty net from Dean McKeown.
Changes were made by the Prior hierarchy for the second half and seemed to work as they dominated the game for long spells, but they couldn’t turn their possession into goals. This began to frustrate Prior and their luck had run out as Chesters grabbed a fourth goal thanks to a Sanderson own goal.
Redhouse continued their good run of form with a comfortable 6-2 victory over Dawdon CW. In a pretty low key game, Dale Huggins continued his impressive start for Redhouse when he outmuscled two Dawdon defenders before shooting into the bottom corner from just outside the area to give Redhouse the lead. Craig Charlton then doubled it soon after, a well worked move lead to Charlton going clear and he made no mistake as he slotted it under the keeper.
Lee "Trigger" Melia then got arguably the pick of the games goals as the struck a 25 yard free kick into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. Melia then went from hero to zero as in a matter of seconds he tried to be clever dribbling his way out of defence and was caught, the Dawdon forward had the easiest of finishes. Redhouse went through a scrappy 5 minutes, however Liam Wooton killed the game off just before halftime with a cool finish.
The second half started in much the same fashion as the first ended, Dale Huggins getting his second of the game from just inside the area. Dawdon did strike back with a quick counter attack, but there after it was one way traffic, Redhouse contriving to miss chance after chance, much to the frustration of the managment. Redhouse finally got a 6th goal as Liam Wooton showed quick feet before firing home into the top corner, however normal service was quickly resumed as a combination of good goalkeeping, the woodwork and abysmal finishing denied Redhouse time and time again.
Redhouses man of the match was Gareth Brazier who started his first game in 4 months after injury. Dawdon’s man of the match was keeper Andrew Guy.
Aquatic played out a 1-1draw with Hylton CW in the league at Marley Pots. Carl Old opened the scoring for Aquatic with a powerful shot from the edge of the box to make it 1-0. Both teams had a few chances with both keepers pulling off good saves. Then just before half time Hylton grabbed an equaliser as Barry Cook latched onto a pass and from 25 yards out scored with a cracking shot into the top corner. Half time came and went but both teams couldn't break each other down. The star men were Old for Aquatic and Cook for Hylton.
Blue House are through to the next round of the TWR Commercial League Challenge Cup as they won 4-2 in an exciting encounter with First Division high fliers Washington Cricket Club. It was the firts division side that started the much brighter side and made the decisive brealthrough as they took a deserved lead as Anthony Dixon finished with aplomb. This was a shock to the system of Blue House and this spurred them into action after a lethargic start. They began putting the pressure on Washington defence and this paid off as they grabbed the equaliser when James Gilhespy ran from the left wing and smashed it past the keeper. Blue House were now in their stride and peppered the Visitors goal whose defence stood firm as half time approached.
Blue House started the second half the way there left the first playing some excellent football and making the visitors keeper pull off save after save, but Blue House were intent on attacking and this left gaps at the back and this was capitalised upon by the Cricketers as they regained the lead with a cool finish from Phil Ingram.
With only ten minutes remaining Blue House gambled on an all out attacking policy, the gamble paid off as they grabbed the equaliser as James Gilhespy grabbed his second goal of the game. Both sides were now looking for the winner and the match looked like it was going to extra time when Blue House won a corner, it was whipped in Thompson flicked on the ball for Luke Morrow to head it across the line and give the Blue a 3-2 advantage.
Washington piled forward in their search for the equaliser, but they overcommitted themselves as Blue House hit them on the break as Martin Hope ran from his own half to slot the ball past the keeper and send his side into the next round.
Jordan Thompson was Blue House man of the match with another barnstorming performance.
Houghton Town B also progressed to the next round as they were4-3 victors against unlucky Hendon Grange Global Gym. Town looked up for it from the start but they fell behind to an early goal as the visitors capitalised on a defensive mix up to take the lead. The B-team were beginning to assert themselves on the game and several clear cut chances were missed, but Town levelled as Kevin Agnew finished well.
More chances came Towns way and it wasn’t long before they were 2-1 up as Andrew Steele smashed home a penalty after Hope was felled in the box. Town increased their lead to 3-1 just before half time when Andrew Steele grabbed his second goal with a thumping header from a corner.
The second half Town started well again and were looking solid, Grange were as usual getting stuck in Town again had several chances to kill the game off but were denied by some outstanding saves from the Grange keeper. With the game seemingly in the bag, Town made several substitutions, how costly they were as Grange pulled back two goals to go on level terms at 3-3. Grange started looking like they could win it, after a period of lethargy Town plugged in and pushed on again looking for the winner, Carr had two good opportunities and also set up chances for Dorian and Lax.
Town then grabbed the winner and it was a goal worthy of winning any game, from a corner the ball bobbled about a bit in the box but landed at Hopes feet on the edge of the box who took a touch and curled an excellent effort into the bottom right hand corner, cue wild celebrations and a place in the next round.
